THE SUIT OF EYES
(Element of AIR / SWORDS)
There are eyes on our phones and computers that keep us connected in moments of isolation, quarantine, and social distancing. These eyes broadcast our most outwardly performative, as well as our most intimate moments, to countless anonymous eyes hovering in the cloud of the inter- net. During our most personal, face-to-face interactions, eyes always seem to reveal what’s truly going on. There’s no hiding behind one’s eyes, which are inextricably linked to the soul.
THE ELEMENT OF AIR
The suit of Eyes is where we have an opportunity to connect to our soul, the spirit that animates us, in the element of air. The origin of the word spirit is ‘to breathe,’ to fill the body with air, movement and life. In the suit of Eyes, we interact with others, with society, in person or virtually. Like the element of air, these interactions can be as calm as a breeze or as forceful as a tornado.
My grandmother always wore a necklace with a golden Italian charm called the mano cornuto, a hand making the two-horns gesture to protect against the evil eye. As a person of Italian descent, I was raised to believe that eyes have unparalleled power to impart blessings or impose curses. I learned then how much power the eye possesses.
The Suit of Eyes is animated by disability advocate Daniel Kish, the resistance, Syrian journalist Raed Fares, hactivist Aaron Schwartz, refugees, young punks, rebels, Edith Piaf, Carl Jung and more.
