THE ELEMENTALS
good-bye court cards!
The Outsider Tarot has evicted the King, Queen, Knight and Page and invited a lovely band of eccentrics known as the ELEMENTALS to take their place. While monarchies are built on the principle of entitlement through blood and thrive on the exclusion of everyone else, the Outsider Tarot was created on the core truth that all beings are equal and deserve equality.
THE SPARK, THE BILLOW, THE FATHOM & THE ROOT
The four Elementals are the Spark, the Billow, the Fathom and the Root. Each of these words was chosen to instantly bring to mind the element they are associated with, i.e. Sparks represent fire. Every elemental embodies either fire, air, water or earth and they bring all that element's properties into a suit.
SPARKS
embody the element of fire, and all four are child or student-like figures at the beginning of a new journey with curiosity.
FATHOMS
personify the element of water. They are masters who possess the deepest understanding of their suit’s power.
BILLOWS
characterize the element of air. Each one is young adult full of inertia, in the early stages of life and exploration.
ROOTS
are the element of earth. They are our teachers, mentors and sages, offering wisdom and lessons in the four suits.
HOW THE ELEMENTALS WORK
For example, in the fiery suit of Lights, the Spark is extremely motivated by the promise of personal transformation and growth that lies ahead. In the watery suit of Bottles, the Spark’s fire is in conflict with the element of water, creating a push-pull between outward and inward drives. The Spark’s fire functions like a hot air balloon in the airy suit of Eyes, lifting the Spark to a place of perspective and clarity. In the earthy suit of Roses, the Spark’s fire is grounded, allowing the Roses to learn the magical properties of the natural world.
SYMBOLS & GLYPHS
To give more depth to your readings with the Outsider Tarot, each card includes glyphs for any associated zodiac sign, planet or alchemical element (fire, water, air, earth) right inside the title box.
