ABOUT BOBBY ABATE

CREATOR OF THE OUTSIDER TAROT

Bobby Abate is a queer artist, filmmaker, activist and Tarot aficionado from Brooklyn, New York. An outsider since the first grade, Bobby found refuge in the underground world of provocateurs, artists, queers, and punks. Bobby's introduction to the Tarot was through the Tarot of the Cat People at the age of seventeen. Ever since, he sought to create a deck that paid homage to all the beautiful misfits who live by their own rules. Bobby spent eight years researching and creating the OUTSIDER TAROT, which marries ancient esoteric systems with the revolutionary spirit of the boundary-breaking forward thinkers that have left an indelible impression on his life.

ART-MAKING PROCESS FOR THE OUTSIDER TAROT

The artwork of the Outsider Tarot is hand drawn and painted with watercolor and gouache. Every image is composed of black outlines filled with bright fields of color that spark the reader’s intuition and psychic powers.

I think of the Outsider Tarot’s style as classic old-school Tarot meets vintage comic books and pop art. The iconography — from TV sets to roses, light bulbs to shopping plazas, magic charms to fabulous drag —  is culled from my Italian roots and my life experience as a queer, a witch, an artist and an activist.
