I was enchanted the first time I saw one of Vincente's photos in which he assumes many different mystical roles — he's a truly magical & gentle being that weaves the most beautiful spells with nature and the elements 🌲🌲🌲! I love the 3 bottles in the foreground, just a small selection of the magical trinkets that line the shelves of this 🌈Queer Witch. The 2 of BOTTLES represents energies coming together to nurture and create.   • Meg of @tarot_nerds with the SPARK of BOTTLES who embodies the element of 🔥 in the world of 💧. We just started Pisces season, which includes a longing to be free come confines. When this Spark appears in personal readings, I think back to when I first started making the Outsider Tarot, feeling creative fire but also disconnected from this new tarot community I wanted to be a part of. When Meg sent this selfie hours before my Kickstarter launch, it gave me a burst of happiness because it reminded me that I've come out of my bottle and it inspired the same energy for Meg: "I recently realized that I’ve never actually introduced myself on Instagram, and no one has any idea who the hell is running the Tarot Nerds account. Then I was asked to participate in the @outsidertarot Selfie Project. Synchronicity! I think we’re all feeling a little like the Spark of Bottles (Page of Cups) these days: isolated, longing for connection with others, deep in our feels. This image so beautifully captures what it can feel like scrolling through social media during the pandemic—we can see what’s happening outside our bubble, but it’s not the same as being a part of the action.   • A little Sunday morning frisket porn with Rihanna and the 5 of Eyes for your viewing pleasure. Let’s start to peel away that Mercury Rx energy and prep for Spring!!! In order to paint the backgrounds of the Outsider Tarot cards with flowing brushstrokes in watercolor and gauche, I had to first mask the foreground with liquified rubber.   • One of my mentors, novelist Lynne Tillman with the ROOT of LIGHTS, aka Shirley Chisholm, who Lynne praises as "an exceptional person. She lit the way for so many others. " Lynne is also an exceptional woman who helped light the way for me as fledgling artist. From CAST IN DOUBT to AMERICAN GENIUS to MEN AND APPARITIONS, Lynne is one of my favorite writers but what's even more incredible is witnessing Lynne give a reading of her work. There's something about the way Lynne reads that feels like watching the most captivating film — and of course I couldn't help but cast her in my film Love Rose, where she reads instructions on how to hold a seance as written by Hereward Carrington from 1920. The link I see between Shirley and Lynne is the ability to spin powerful spells from the podium — words that inspire and shed light where lights needs to be shed — and the ability to step in to new roles with courage and fire. Adam actually requested the Tower (I didn't want to send this one out cold to anyone) and I think this image captures the cards energy perfectly - I'm definitely getting some Blair Witch Project poster vibes here, too. All I can say is PLEASE follow Alana who has illuminated and added so much light to my experience of Tarot & Astrology: "I love that I received the Ace of Lights ON the day that Bobby's @outsidertarot Kickstarter launched (and then fully funded in just 5.5 hours!). In some ways it's the start of making his Outsider Tarot deck a reality, and in other ways it's the completion of this project. Seeing something all the way through leaves a wonderful open space with no regrets, a void where your completed project once was that is now pure potential. So what's next?! The illustration, with the bright red bulb and the lantern-like paper box, made me think immediately of Lunar New Year happening this week, with the new moon in wonderfully weird, revolutionary Aquarius. What do we want to spark now that will burn bright by the time the sun is in Leo lighting up a full Aquarius moon six months from now? Ace of Lights energy, to me, is the spirit of revolution itself. In my mind, the Fire Ace in any deck is the smaller-scale, everyday equivalent of The Tower. It's combustible, exciting, and potentially destructive, but oh so invigorating! It feels like the needle on my skin when I got my first tattoo. It makes me think of the first big protest I ever joined, 20 years ago. It reminds me of the first night I ever spent in jail after getting arrested for civil disobedience. This Ace is present in the moments when you decide to DO something, when you're brave enough to put skin in the game and take action, and you stand behind it so hard, it leaves an imprint on your soul so deep that it becomes part of how you define yourself forever afterwards. Here's to brave beginnings, truly new ideas, and bold action. Cheers to the Outsider Tarot, to the outsiders it pays homage to, and to Bobby. You've done more than just create an amazing Tarot deck.   • Why did I photograph the Outsider Tarot with garbage? ASSESSMENT! Replacing Judgement from the Majors, Assessment shows each of the objects that represent the four suits discarded at the dump, in a state of decay. ASSESSMENT is a reminder that the light bulb 💡, 🍾bottle, 👁eye and 🌹rose are only representations of spiritual energy, they aren't the alchemical energy of fire, water, air and earth themselves. We can not take any physical object with us when we pass on. When ASSESSMENT appears, the questions are: What are we leaving in behind? What have we contributed to the world that will be a home to all those who come after us? The scene of ASSESSMENT is ruled by Saturn, because Saturn maintains the physical stage that each Fool absolutely requires to play each and every scene of the Major Arcana: 🦉🐛🦇THE NATURAL WORLD. 🌱🌴🌲🌸🌽 As a Tarot maker, I think a lot about the legacy of physical objects I'll leave behind in this world, and their impact on the environment - not to mention the byproducts of my everyday life. D foraged a saw & mallet from our basement & with pandemic telecommuting, the factory is omnipresent. Douglas is the one who introduced me to Rachel Pollack, the one who bought me my first Smith-Waite deck and he saw every single iteration of the Outsider Tarot as I designed, researched, painted then redesigned, re-researched, & repainted for 8 years. While there are certainly more dire issues in the world, it's pretty insane that one of the world's most famous female pop stars is so publicly imprisoned by a conservatorship. I love the Ouroboros wrapping itself around the photo to bite its own tail and complete the circle — a classic alchemical symbol of cycles, renewal and coming full circle.   • 💛🖤♥️Valentine's Day. When I was young queer Outsider at the end of my teens, I remember how painful & tortuous this day was — I felt soooooo alone. This is a holiday created by the Hallmark corporation to sell greeting cards in the dead of winter but there's kinda nothing wrong with setting aside a day to celebrate the power of 💙 (and maybe listen to some DEE-LITE?) I wish I could tell the younger me that there are many things to love and receive love from today: friends, family, pets — the flowers, the snow, the sun (if you have it) — and yourself. The central image is a drawing I did for the card backs about 6 years ago before settling on the pattern design. I always wanted to use the drawing and as it turns out, it's perfect for the 22x22" reading cloth because it creates a circle of protected space in which to do readings (it is also the card back for the Travel edition of the Outsider Tarot, yet to be unlocked.) I have to admit, my mouth dropped to the floor when I first saw this!! 🔥 I am obsessed with HM’s artistry of make-up, costume & character exploration. This is what the Majors in the Outsider Tarot inspire us to do — jump into the role and explore! Hannabal Marie's take on the DEVIL really touched me: "When I first handled The Devil card, it was upside down. So, I will interpret it that way. Working on past problems, overcoming other problems and obsessing over them, all at once. Being addicted to certain sad feelings & being stuck in a physical realm of humanly difficulties/issues...completely forgetting my beautiful, magical self. Also, I see a personal sign within, too. I'm not alone but on a rather personal path and struggling/hardships are just another part of that. This card is a symbol of understanding this AND knowing I hold the choice on how things can ultimately be controlled/changed in my own personal favor. Left or right, good or bad. That I still have "a chance" if I work to change it but sitting idly by, being weighed by my own mental clutter will only keep piling over...suffocating me. My past of obsessing over everything. The thoughts of other people. Obsessing over what I did or didn't do right or wrong. My compulsion to make sure ppl loved me or at the core--tolerated me. Watching my mouth and holding my tongue. Being too polite that it ultimately "hurt more than helped." Giving my all with no reward returned. Addicted to my own personal sorrows and vice. Seeking out momentary pleasures, knowing they wouldn't last yet torturing myself when they'd end, just the same. Like a moth to a flame...who is really to blame?   • The artwork for the Outsider Tarot is hand drawn and painted with watercolor and gauche. I really wanted to capture the energy and boldness of old school tarot decks with queerness and diversity! Pictured are some of the older decks that inspired the Outsider Tarot: 1) The UNIVERSITY BOOKS edition of the SMITH-WAITE deck was printed in 1959, a decade before it exploded into the mainstream. The 4 color printing process, a number that mirrors the 4 elements, electrifies my eyes every time I look at it! I wanted the colors of the Outsider Tarot to pop like this. 2) The MANLY P. HALL deck foregrounds symbols & shapes to stimulate the psychic mind. The Outsider Tarot is influenced by the geometry & symmetry here. 3) La SIBILLA ORIGINALE from 1890 connects to my Italian roots, I love the mundanity of this deck — the naive drawing style was a massive influence. 4) El GRAN TAROT ESOTERICO by Maritxu Guler is one of my of favorite decks. Maritxu boldly reinvented divination systems by Oswald Wirth and Eudes Picard, injecting a strong feminist point of view that celebrates the magical powers of the natural world. This deck inspired me to reinvent! 5) The THOMPSON LENG is a rare deck offered as a promotion in the 1930's by MY WEEKLY, a women’s magazine from the UK. It strangely and boldly combines the Smith-Waite symbolism with the little known Eudes Picard system. The art & color palate of this deck is unlike anything I've ever seen — think Henry Darger meets the first edition of Women Woman. I was greatly inspired by the boldness of this art. A sad thing that all of these decks have in common is a complete lack of inclusivity and diversity. It's exhausting to read cards that portray such a white-washed world. It wasn't the way the world was then and it certainly isn't the way the world is now. I applaud decks like the MODERN WITCH that completely reclaim the Smith Waite imagery. These decks are extremely important & necessary. For Outsider Tarot, I just wanted to just start over. The biggest leap was to remove all the figures from the Majors. These are the stages of birth, life, enlightenment and death. We are the figures of the Major Arcana.
